The Village Pub

It's timbered frame has played it's part, For all who care to see
A slight twist here, a bulge just there, some tiny cracks maybe
It's walls are made of local stone, In those days built to last
If they could talk, they would recall, the epics of our past

For they have stored the chatter, of every story told
Nothing now is new to them, The price for growing old
Without a doubt, they would recall the Battle of the Somme
Al Alemein, the Falkland Isles, the dropping of the bomb

The faces of those village lads, who never did return
These walls remember them each day, their memory not to spurn
The sporting heroes of the time, recalled with utmost ease
Jack Hobbs and Sutcliffe, Tommy Farr, and many more like these

So as you sit in comfort, about to sip your ale
Just glance up at those rafters, before you start your tale
'Cos up there on those beams, chopped out of English oak
Our history lies recorded, Etched in dust and smoke.
